A Maya Exploration Center travel course led by Dr. Michael Grofe

This course is designed for students of varying levels to learn about ancient Khmer history, culture, and mathematics as they travel through the vast city of Angkor. With Siem Reap as the nightly home base, day trips will explore the city, its museums, its markets, Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, a host of other major Angkor complexes will happen during the week. Dr. Grofe's personal research on Khmer religion and culture will also be featured along the journey.

All day: Flights arrive to Siem Reap and privte transport to the Tara Angkor Hotel

12-2pm Rest and lunch
2-5pm Angkor National Museum
6-7pm Lecture: History and Archaeology of the Khmer Empire
Jan 6, Monday: Angkor Wat
5am Departure for Angkor Wat from hotel lobby
6-7am Sunrise over Angkor Wat
7-8am Breakfast break along the moat
8-12pm Tour of the Angkor Wat complex
12-6pm Lunch and rest at hotel
6-7pm Lecture: Cosmology and Religion of the Khmer
Jan 7, Tuesday: Angkor Thom
7-8am Breakfast at hotel
8-12pm Walking through the Victory Gate and the Bayon
12-2pm Lunch break
2-5pm The Elephant Terraces, the Terrace of the Leper King, and the towers
Jan 8, Wednesday: Remote Temples
7-8am Breakfast at hotel
8-11am Travel to and tour of Beng Mealea
11-12pm Travel to Kulen Mountain where the first king of Angkor was crowned
12-2pm Lunch, swimming in the waterfalls, and river carvings at Kulen
2-4pm Banteay Srei
5pm Return to the hotel
Jan 9, Thursday: Central Angkor
7-8am Breakfast at hotel
8-10pm Preah Khan
10-2pm Lunch break and rest back at the hotel
2-5pm Exploring Ta Keo and Ta Prohm
6pm Drinks and snacks by picnic at Angkor Wat's moat as the sun sets over its temples
Jan 10, Friday: Tonle Sap
7-8am Breakfast at the hotel
8-12pm Transport to and boat excursion on Tonle Sap
1-2pm Lunch break
2-3pm The early temples of Bakong
3-4pm The temples of Lolei
7-9pm Final dinner and Apsara Dance Show
