Maya Exploration Center: Education Through Exploration

Copan and Quirigua - The Edge of the Classic Maya World
A Maya Exploration Center travel course led by Dr. Michael Grofe

This course is designed for students of varying levels to learn about the Ancient Maya through an exploration of their southeastern Classic Period capitals. The week with starts in Guatemala City with visits to anthropology musuems before travelling across the Honduran border to Copan. Three days in Copan will be spent intensively touring the ancient city and attending workshops that explain the city's illustrious history through archaeolgical evidence and hieroglyphic texts. A dawn departure on day 5 will give the group enough time to visit Quirigua (renowned for its 10 meter tall stelae - tallest in the entire Maya world) before ending up in Guatemala's colonial capital, Antigua. A final day in Antigua will start with a tour of colonial period churches, continue with a visit to the famous "Casa de Jade" and end with a celebratory final dinner and course closing ceremony. Dr. Grofe's personal research on Maya civilization will be an invaluable source of learning all along the journey.
