Ancient Maya Mathematics and Culture in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
A course for the students of Professor Ximena Catepillan at Millersville University, Pennsylvania.

This course is designed for college level students to learn about ancient Maya History, Culture, and Mathematics as they travel through the ruins of the Yucatan Peninsula. The MEC instructors for the course will be top scholars in the field of Maya archaeology.

Before the course, a 5-day classroom component at Millersville University (May 12-16) will survey a variety of mathematical ideas developed by non-European cultures. After the course, there will be a final 3-hour meeting at Millersville to report on student projects.

May 17, Saturday: Arrival and Orientation
Fly into Cancun, meet at the baggage claim area and bus the 45 minutes to Playa Del Carmen. Check into the hotel and have a look around town. In the evening, attend the orientation meeting and the course's first lecture, A Brief History of Ancient Maya Civilization.
 
May 18, Sunday: Lectures in Playa del Carmen

9-11am: Explore Playa del Carmen
11-12pm: Lecture: Maya History
12-2pm: Lunch break
2-3pm: Lecture: Maya Numbers
4-5pm: Lecture: Maya Calendars,Part I

8-12pm: Tour of Chichen Itza
12-1pm: Lunch
1-4pm: Tour of "Old" Chichen Itza
6-8pm: Lecture: Maya Geometry

May 21, Wednesday: Ek Balam
7-8am: Breakfast and hotel check out
8-1pm: Transport to and tour of Ek Balam
Lecture at the "White Reading House" Temple
1-3pm: Lunch and visit to a cenote
3-6pm: Return to Playa del Carmen
Overnight in Playa del Carmen
 
May 22, Thursday: Playa del Carmen

3-4pm: Lecture: Maya Calendar Systems, Part II
5-6pm: Maya Mathematics and Culture Quiz Bowl
6-8pm: Group dinner and closing ceremonies
