The Ancient Inca of Peru and Their Descendants - Cuzco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu
A travel course led by Archaeologist Christopher Powell for the students of Professor Mark Freyberg at Simpson College

This two week course and lecture series will bring participants to the colorful Inca highland communities of Peru. Day trips to ruins and evening lectures will illuminate anicent Inca history, archaeoastronomy, mathematics, and architecture. In addition, day trips in the sacred valley will investigate weaving traditions and modern Quechua culture, the direct descendants of the Inca. While in Cuzco, the course's homebase, participants will volunteer at a local orphanage and learn about the current social challenges in Peru. The final days of the course will be spent south of Lima exploring the Paracas desert and the Ballestras Islands.
