Ancient History, Culture, and Science in the Maya Ruins of Chiapas
A study abroad course for the students of Professor Paul Jones, University of Cincinnati

This course is designed for college level students to learn about ancient Maya history, sciences and culture while traveling through the ruins of Northern Chiapas, Mexico. Participants will be home based in Palenque, taking day trips and receiving lectures in the evenings. The MEC instructors for the course are all top scholars in the field of Maya archaeology.

June 15, Sunday: Arrival and Orientation
Fly into Villahermosa, Mexico, check into the hotel and attend a brief orientation meeting.
 
June 16, Monday: La Venta Park
8-9am: Breakfast at hotel
9-12pm: Tour of La Venta
12-2pm: Lunch and Hotel check out
2-4pm: Transport to Palenque
5-6pm: Lecture on Archaeoastronomy
Evening: Entertainment at Don Mucho
 
June 17, Tuesday: Palenque
7-8am: Breakfast at Don Mucho
8-12pm: Tour of Palenque
12-2pm: Lunch and afternoon break
2-3pm: Visit to the Palenque Museum
5-6pm: Lecture on Maya Calendars
Evening: Free time
 
June 18, Wednesday: Jungle Walk
7-8am: Breakfast at Don Mucho
8-12pm: Ethnobotany jungle walk
12-5pm: Lunch and afternoon break
5-6pm: Lecture on Maya Geometry
Evening: Free time
 
June 19, Thursday: Bonampak
8-11am: Transport to the east
11-1pm: Tour of Plan de Ayulta
1-3pm: Picnic at Golondrinas Waterfalls
3-5pm: Tour of Bonampak
Evening: Movie: Popol Vuh
 
June 20, Friday: Yaxchilan
7-8am Breakfast
8-9am Boat trip to Yaxchilan
9-1pm Measuring at Yaxchilan
1-3pm Back and lunch at museum
3-6pm Transport back to Palenque
 
June 21, Saturday: Palenque
7-9am Solstice sunrise in the ruins
9-1pm Rubber and Stucco experiments
1-7pm Free time
7-9pm Closing ceremonies
 
June 22, Sunday: Departure
4am transport to Vilahermosa and flights out back to the USA
 


LODGING
Villahermosa: Hotel Cencali. The rooms have AC, telephones, cable TV, and private baths.

Palenque: El Panchan, just outside of the Palenque ruins. El Panchan has two on-site restaurants, laundry service and an internet cafe. The cabanas have double bed, fans, private bathrooms and hot water.

Frontera Corozal: The Hotel Escudo Jaguar. The rooms have double beds, fans, private baths and mosquito netting.
